I, a shop manager of AT EASE, had been in Takaido, Tachikawa and Fuchu, and I used to go and come back between Tokyo and Suwa once two weeks.
I usually used bus, sometimes local trains.
From this experience, I'll show how you go to Suwa is the better way, especially from Tokyo to Suwa.

The one who is rich but busy. Super express"Super AZUSA" is convenient. You are able to go Suwa for two hours and 10 minines or so from Shinjyuku. Sinkansen in not avalable yet, I'm afraid.

The one who has physical strength and too much time Let's walk Nakasendo or Koshukaido on foot.

The one who is not rich but busy. Why don't you buy a coupon ticket"Azusa Kaisuuken" at ticket shops. It costs about 4200-4400 yen one way.

The one who want to enjoy scenery along the railway without hurry I recommend using local train.
On saturday and holiday, "Holiday Kaisoku"(fast train) is available.
You can enjoy beautiful Yatsugatake moutains or Kai Komagatake mountain.

Budget Traveler
(Anyway the one who wants to go and come economically.)
Using Chuo Kosoku Bus(Chuo highway Bus) is my recommendation.
One way, 3060 yen. A round trip ticket is 5500 yen.
You had better not to use highway bus on the day, week or season when a traffic jam occurs.

The one who feels highway fare is wasteful.
Let's go on Route 20. From Takao to Sagamiko, you can enjoy moutain pass driving.
In Kofu city, as there are many traffic signals, traffic jams may occur sometimes. You can easily pass through the other sections.
On fruits seasons, you can enjoy grapes or peachs along Route 20 near Kofu city.
Road station "Hakushu","Shinshu Tsutaki jyuku" and "Kai Yamato" will be available.(Road Stn, has parking, restrooms and shops.)
For the one who wants to know more Are you going to use a bus or a car?
Are you going to use train?
